Women Who Embroider Their Own Stories

Within the series of workshops “Among women, the stories we want to tell”, we held the photo embroidery workshop with women in Salina Cruz, with the objective of narrating our stories and collectivizing our feelings through the art of photography and embroidery in an environment of trust that contributes to the creation of safe spaces for women.

We met again on April 25 at Gunná Gulá Sá and began to observe the printed photos. The participants could see themselves in some, or recognize themselves in photos of the sea of flowers. They wondered: What stories can be told with these photos? What would they like to tell? Each woman, with her photo in hand, connected with her feelings, beginning to sprout ideas. The afternoon was spent among photographs, threads, needles, laughter, and a lot of creativity.

At the end, as a plenary, they shared their results in a few words, including through poetry, and reflected about the importance of building collectivity among women, where our stories can be told, heard, and embraced.

A few words written by the women:

“With the words shared from the women in front of me, my heart is comfortable and is now beating on the right side,” Women with love, Amelia Villalobos.

“Each woman has a ray of light and to meet them and to create a circle of these little rays where they come together, becoming a glow, that strengthens the heart of each one of us as we stay together,” Women of light, Marimar Huerta.

“I exist in the sea. I exist in the sky. There’s a story being written. I walk on the rocks of the sea, the stars remember me, the seagulls speak of me, the salty air recognizes me, my presence claims me in everything because I am everything. I am present.” Buba
