Declaration about the Armed Attack Against Members of UCIZONI

The Committee for the Integral Defense of Human Rights Gobixha (CODIGODH) expresses its strongest condemnation of the armed attack that occurred this Thursday in the border region between Santo Domingo Petapa and San Juan Mazatlán, Oaxaca, where three members of the Union of Indigenous Communities of the Northern Zone of the Isthmus (UCIZONI) lost their lives.

Additionally, it has been reported that the aggressors have issued threats against the population of El Platanillo, which currently remains entrenched in fear of new violent acts.

With this serious escalation of violence that makes vulnerable fundamental rights of life, security, and a peaceful community, CODIGODH:

1. Is fully in solidarity with UCIZONI, with the families of the victims, and with the affected communities of this crime, reiterating the support of their legitimate demand for justice and security.
2. Demands that the Government of the State of Oaxaca acts in an immediate and impartial manner, unfolding the necessary actions to guarantee the integrity of the population and avoid a future tragedy worse than this one.
3. Demands that the Attorney General of the State carries out an exhaustive and objective investigation that follows every aspect of the law to identify and punish those responsible.

What occurred on this day is a reality that for years has been ignored and minimized: structural violence that hits indigenous communities in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
